Role of Link Popularity in getting Top Google
Rankings
Link popularity
has assumed tremendous importance for getting good ranks in Google
now a days. In fact, what started as a friendly reciprocal link
exchange program among various webmasters has now become a
sub-industry within the SEO industry itself, with thousands of link
farms popping up every day, claiming to provide 100s of "quality
industry-related links/trade leads" for huge sum of money! Yes, if
you are interested in getting top ranks in Google, then you must pay
effort in building up links for your site. But, first the basics.
How many sites link to your site? In other words, state the link
popularity health of your site. Have you ever been asked this
question? And, did not know what to say?
Go to Google. Type in link:www.cnn.com in the search box. The number
that Google throws up, namely, 115,000 (on the blue-colored bar
present on top of the page) at the time of writing this article, is
the total number of sites that are currently linking to www.cnn.com,
and which have been indexed by Google. In other words, this number
can be greater than 115,000, or more than 115,000 sites may have
currently linked to www.cnn.com, but it won't show up with the
(link: www.cnn.com), because those sites are not in the Google's
Database.
Methodology for building link popularity through Reciprocal Link
Exchange Programs
1. Create a html page, preferably named as
"Resources/Links/Partners" and place a link of this page from Index
Page of your site. This page should never be more than 1 click away
from the index page of your site, else webmasters won't be
interested in participating in the reciprocal link exchange program.
2. Target both "industry-related" and "non-industry-related"
websites as your link exchange partners. For example, if you are
providing SEO services, then try getting links from
"industry-related websites (i.e. websites dealing with SEO, maybe
your business rivals). This is important, because if 10 of your
rival (here SEO) sites give link to your site, then Google will
surely pay importance to your site, because getting links from rival
companies are difficult. Your site MUST be of some high caliber,
else the other 10 sites won't have linked! Also, try procuring
general links as well.
3. Always exchange links with websites which have high PageRank (PR)
(at least 4, the more the better!) (both Index Page as well as
Resources/Links Page of the Link Partner's site should have PRs of
>=4)
4. Have a link code ready for participating in link exchange
program. Here is a sample link code for a SEO company.
<a href =
http://www.search-engine-optimization-ranking-placement-services.com
title = "search engine optimization ranking placement
services">Search Engine Optimization, Ranking, Placement
Services</a> - Offers Search Engine Optimization, Ranking, Placement
Services to get top ranks in various Search Engines.
Always prefer a text link (as given above) in comparison to a banner
link, where your chance of Google spiders, i.e. Googlebot finding
the potential keywords is limited only to the "alt tag" of the
banner. Also, Google pays importance to the text of the incoming
link/anchor text (i.e. the incoming link text must contain high
potential, relevant keywords), so develop a link text with title
("search engine optimization ranking placement services") which will
help you in Google Ranking.
5. Refrain from java script link code because Google spiders find it
difficult to index.
6. There are various ways of approaching and procuring potential
link partners. Firstly, how to get industry related websites to link
to yours? Suppose, "search engine optimization", "search engine
promotion" and "search engine ranking" are 3 of your core keywords.
Go to Google. Type in each of the three keywords, and find the top
10 sites for each keyword. Now, you have 10 * 3 = 30 websites. Visit
the links page (if applicable, since some sites refrain from
participating in link exchange programs) of each of the 30 sites,
and note down all the sites that are linking to these sites. For
example, if each of these 30 sites have 10 sites linking to it, you
have 10 * 30 = 300 potential websites to exchange links with.
(Please note that our experience shows that conversion rate of
successful link exchange is 1 in 4-5, i.e. if you approach 4-5
websites, 1 site will ultimately provide you with reciprocal link,
so in order to get high incoming links, you must research
extensively and find more potential link partners. Also, as
mentioned above, always try to exchange links with websites having
PR >=4).
7. If you request a link to a top-level page or the homepage of your
site, this will have a positive effect on this page. If the
PageRank™ of this page increases, then the page below it will
increase (if the internal linking structure is correct), but it will
still be one PageRank™ number below the page above it that was
linked to.
8. Manually submit the page to Google where your link partner has
placed the link of your site.
For example, if your link partner's website is www.abc.com and he
has placed your website in his resources page,
www.abc.com/resources.html, then go to
http://www.google.com/addurl.html and submit
www.abc.com/resources.html. It is very essential for getting good
ranks in Google that you submit the page where your site has been
placed by your link partners.
Importance of Messageboards, General Forums and Guestbooks
Of late, you will find that some websites belonging to the
"most-highly-competitive" industries (e.g. casino gambling industry,
domain registration and web hosting industry) that have achieved top
ranks through links from message boards, general public forums and
guestbooks. These techniques are sometimes highly profitable for
Google Ranking and hence, it is wise to do some research in Google
and find some popular messageboards/forums/guestbooks which are
already in Google's Index. Here also the target should always be to
get messageboards/forums/guestbooks which have a minimum PR of 4.
After finding the potential messageboards/forums/guestbooks, submit
your site's information, containing a description and URL in those
messageboards/forums/guestbooks.
For example, let's say www.messageboard.com is a popular message
board
After you have submitted your site's information in
www.messageboard.com, it will generate a URL, say,
www.messageboard.com/msgboard/1.html where your site has been
placed. Here also, you need to submit this newly-generated URL.
(i.e. www.messageboard.com/msgboard/1.html) which contains
information and links to your site to Google
(http://www.google.com/addurl.html) for achieving good ranks in
Google.
Note:
Try targeting message boards of educational (.edu)/governmental
(.gov) institutions since they usually have high PRs and receive
huge amount of traffic every day.

How to beat Google? Why the PageRank
Algorithm is a joke
Ever
thought you might like to boost your ranking from a PageRank of 5 to
8 overnight? Would you like your site to be as popular as MSN or
even Yahoo? With a little hard work, and following the example set
below by VacationRentals.com, you can be amongst the most important
sites on the net and beat Google at their own game.
For
years Google has prided themselves on the fact that their PageRank
algorithm provides democratic search results and often brags about
their staff of PhD?s who continuously work to bring the most
?democratic? results to the web. For about the same amount of time
webmasters for obvious reasons have worked equally as hard trying to
stay atop Google?s efforts to exploit the index for its own gain.
For
the most part the system works pretty well. However when the stakes
are high enough. Someone always finds a way to beat Google. In this
article we would like to thank VacationRentals.com for showing us
the way to beat Google at their own game, and get away with it, as
it seems Google does not have a way to combat these tactics yet.
VacationRentals.com set out to score high for the very competitive
term? Vacation rentals? Overnight they went from being at near the
bottom of their category in the Google Directory to the very top.
They secured the #3 position for their most competitive term
(vacation rentals) and they have also been able to successfully beat
Google at many other keywords. How did they do it? It’s all in
understanding PageRank and how to manipulate and manufacture
incoming links and thus site popularity.
The
bottom line is that the more incoming links you have the better. Now
there is a lot out there on the Internet on how to boost your link
popularity. You can trade links with other webmasters, you can join
link farms, and you can start an associate program to name a few.
But these will often only garner a few hundred incoming links. In
the case of VacationRentals.com this was not enough to score a top
position for their main keyword? Vacation rentals? The solution and
surefire way to beat Google lay in simply manufacturing literally
thousands of incoming links. It worked like a charm and for months
now they have enjoyed top rankings in Google WITHOUT PENALTY. Yes,
that is right folks, WITHOUT A PENALTY FROM GOOGLE.
The
first thing VacationRentals.com did was to create similar websites
on different IP addresses with different host names that appeared to
offer unique and original content. They used differing IP addresses
to help mask the fact that these sites were all on the same host
from Google. For example? There main site VacationRentals.com offers
vacation properties all around the globe (IP address 216.136.21.10).
They then registered dozens of domain names that were tied to
popular areas and built what appears to be similar sites (such as
floridavacations.com, greatvacations.com, mexicovacations.com to
name a few). The chart below gives an example of just a few of these
sites.
Vacationrentals.com - 216.136.21.10
Floridavacations.com - 216.136.21.11
Mexicovacations.com - 216.136.21.12
1001vacationrentals.com - 216.136.21.13
hawaiianvacation.com - 216.136.21.15
On
each of these sites, they linked to the home page on their main site
in the footer of each page. The combined PageRank of these
additional sites helped to feed the PageRank of their main site, as
well as each of the satellite web sites. Operating the site in the
background and then pushing out similar content on what appeared to
be a different site was a sneaky way to successfully manufacture
PageRank, not to mention a nice way to fool Google into widening the
net for capturing traffic. This tactic has been at work for over a
year with great success and NO PENALTY FROM GOOGLE FOR DUPLICATE
CONTENT.
However, this tactic is hardly new? What truly sets
VacationRentals.com apart from everyone else is what they did next.
Vacation Rentals registered literally hundreds of domain names, most
of these domain names being a popular misspelling of a likely
keyword someone would type into a search. A few examples include?
peoms.com?, tranlate.com?, ?loasangeles.com? And hundreds of others.
You can do a Google back link trace to see more, there is also a
list at the bottom of this article for your reference which lists a
few more; however it needs to be said that the true number is
unknown, it could be in the thousands.
Each
of these bogus sites was then padded with what appears to be junk
directory listings provided by an associate program to look like a
topical search site. After the junk directory links, they created a
random blob of text which is keyword rich and for the most part,
complete nonsense. That is to say utter nonsense to a human being,
but absolute keyword rich gold to Google which is always looking for
content. An example of this bogus content can be found below from?
Tranlate.com?
Snip
<<<
We link up with the free translations that have the free online
language translation and the translate translator with multiple
languages down so the translate Dutch English or the Norwegian
translation that gives you the Gaelic translation will be very
accurate. We have the online Thai translation that will give you the
online language translator for the Hawaiian translations and many
more.
>>> End snip
As
you can see, the text is complete nonsense and exists for one
purpose only, and that is to provide keyword rich text for Google.
It works like a charm by the way.
Perhaps in their most brilliant move, and the purpose for these fake
web sites? VacationRentals.com added a link at the bottom of every
one which states? For more on vacation rentals click here?. These
links being strategically placed include their top keyword, and when
you add them up, it equates to MASSIVE MANUFACTURED INFLATED
PAGERANK WITHOUT PENALTY.
By
doing the above for literally hundreds of bogus domain names (maybe
thousands), VacationRentals.com has to the top of the Google Index,
and went from a PageRank of 5 to a whopping 8 nearly overnight.
VacationRentals.com can now count them among one of the most
important and popular web sites on the Internet, almost as popular
as Yahoo and MSN themselves. This is all in thanks to Google’s
PageRank Algorithm. The funny thing about this is that when I first
discovered what VacationRentals.com was doing, I thought that for
sure, this would garner a penalty, and Google surely would not let
such an obvious attempt to SPAM them stand, however, after months of
letting it stand and awarding VacationRentals.com with ever higher
PageRank. It appears the Jury is out. GOOGLE WILL NOT PENALIZE FOR
THIS BEHAVIOR.
So
hats off to VacationRentals.com for showing us the way to finally
once and for all beat Google at their own game and make Google’s
staff of PhD’s look like a misfit bunch of community college
dropouts. It looks like the domain name land rush is just about to
begin again!
As
promised? a short list of the domain named mentioned above.

There are two primary methods to get top positions within search
engine results pages. Major search engines typically display search
results as a combination of
sponsored listings and free
(organic) listings. So, you can either bid your way to the top
immediately within the sponsored listings or "optimize"
your site to appear within the free listings; this process is called
Search Engine
Optimization, or
SEO.
The choice is yours, however, most successful websites use a
combination of both strategies in order to dominate their
competition and maximize their top positioning.
There are over 250 million searches a day on Google alone. Research
shows that a large portion of traffic comes from search engines,
but, if your site is not in the top positions, that traffic won't be
coming to you. It is a proven fact that people rarely go past the
first page and hardly ever go past the third page of search results
to find what they are seeking. That is why
SEO is important
to marketers, webmasters, or anyone that owns a website. Search
engine optimization strategies enable you to achieve top positioning
without a continuous payment for positions.
What are sponsored
listings?
Sponsored listings are obtained when you
pay (or bid)
on a particular keyword or position within a search engine results
page. These listings occupy a small portion of the search engine
listings because usually, the larger portion is reserved for free
listings. See more about sponsored listings here.
What are organic (free
listings) and how do I get them?
Free
listings are the foundation of a search engine's credibility. Search
engines spend considerable energy crawling the Internet and indexing
website content so that when visitors perform a query, they can
display what they have deemed to be highly relevant results. Each
search engine has its own methodology to rank your website in order
to determine the relevancy to any particular search term. All you
have to do in order to rank high is to make sure your website is
deemed relevant in the eyes of the search engines.
What are search engine
optimization services?
Search engine optimization (SEO) is an established process of
improving how your web site interacts with search engines and
thereby boosting your overall search engine ranking for free
listings. Professional SEO involves many processes including
research and selection of popular search terms (keywords),
performing HTML code analysis, improving keyword density, enhancing
content, enhancing page construction, testing, verification and
submitting to search engines. Finally, a linking initiative should
be started to help gain inbound links to the website from other
industry-related sites.
What is the benefit of
search engine optimization?
There is usually a large amount of up-front work involved in SEO;
however, the payoff is a long-term flow of free traffic. Free
listings tend to have a higher click-thru ratio than sponsored
listings. By achieving positions that are free, you can
significantly reduce the amount of paid positions you maintain. Free
listings tend to remain in place much longer; unlike paid listings
that evaporate the minute you stop paying for them.
Search engine
optimization services
Can
you do the work yourself or should you hire outside for search
engine optimization services? There are some considerations when
making this decision and you will need to fully understand the
concept and strategy of search engine optimization. Read The ABC's
of Outsourcing SEO for more information. Simply, if your budget can
afford an SEO company, hire one. Otherwise, be prepared to spend a
few months just researching and learning before you even begin. And,
be careful what you read - search engine requirements and
methodology change by the day. Much of the information that exists
may be outdated and you don't want to waste time backtracking.
What are the costs for
search engine optimization?
The costs for search engine optimization services vary greatly
primarily because of the marketplace, amount of work that is
required for various keywords and the number of competitive listings
that already exist. For some SEO companies, costs will vary based on
the number of pages you need optimized. A few will also include the
costs of search engine submissions in their price. Because of all
these variables, prices can range from $1,500 to $15,000 or more to
outsource SEO.
Top
Google™ is clearly the most
popular search engine today. If you achieve a top search engine
ranking in Google, you are considered very lucky. Especially if the
first page position is for a highly competitive keyword. There are
many factors involved in achieving ranking success within Google.
The three main factors are CONTENT, TRAFFIC, and LINKING.
The
purpose of this tutorial is to remain as non-technical as possible.
In order to judge the value of a site based on inbound linking,
Google developed the algorithm it calls PageRank. This assigns a
rating from zero to ten to a site based on the relative strength of
the combined links pointing to it. Sometimes you will see PageRank
defined as 4/10. This means that the page has been given a PageRank
of four.
Building PageRank
So,
how do you get a good PageRank? It takes research and some hard
work. We could tell you all the theories about the Google algorithm
with mathematical estimates. However, the purpose of this tutorial
is to give you the short, non-technical version. The most important
factor in Google's algorithm is
who is linking to you. Not so much
how many links, but how important are the websites that link to you.
The best way to get Google to give up a top search engine ranking is
to get links of value. See more about
linking in the
reciprocal linking tutorial.
Here's the facts:
Google scours the web indexing pages and assigning a PageRank based
on a sophisticated algorithm. This involves many factors we've
covered earlier in this series of tutorials, however, the most
important component is the quantity and quality of links pointing to
your website. Click
Google's explanation to see
more information.
If
you want to see what Google thinks about any given web page,
download the
Google Toolbar, browse the web,
and pay attention to the PageRank displayed within the toolbar. When
you find sites that are highly ranked, go to our tools and check
their link popularity... you'll get the picture. PageRank is often
directly related to link popularity.
Periodically, the Google crawler starts over and scours the web
again. It starts with pages that have the highest rank and works its
way down. If your site is new and has no other sites pointing to it,
chances are it won't get indexed.
Practical Example:
You have a new website that sells tools. You get an authority on
home improvement to place a link from their site to yours. When
their site is re-indexed by GoogleBot, the link to your site is
found and the GoogleBot follows it to you. Because the home
improvement site is considered an authority, this gives you a boost
in value and hopefully, positioning.
***Don't be fooled by imitations. Getting yourself included in a
link farm or websites established for the sole purpose of creating
multitudes of links will not help you, and may in fact even HURT
you. Google places a lot of importance on the link quality and goes
to great lengths to spot these obvious tricks.
How
do I get links to my site?
This
is where the hard work comes in. First, you must research Google and
other search engines to find top sites related to your industry. If
you have downloaded the Google Toolbar, you will see their PageRank.
If it is at least as high as your current PageRank (preferably as
high as possible), the site would be a good target to exchange links
with. The site should have a visible "links" or "partners" page
within the site navigation, where you can find active links to other
industry related sites.
Once
you have targeted potential link exchange partners, you must then
contact them and ask them to link to you. One of the best ways to
get them to do this is to place a link to them first, contact them
and ask them to link back. This is called "reciprocal linking".
There is software out there that can assist with this, but nothing
takes the place of the personal approach.
Another strategy is to place content on your site that makes people
WANT to link to you. If you have a content-rich site with relevant
information about your industry or product, over time you will find
other sites linking to you in increasing numbers.
For further
strategy related to link building, read "Choosing Link Partners" in
Chris' Position
website promotion articles.

If your Web site doesn't rank well with the major search engines
you're missing out on the full sales potential of your site. Keep in
mind that 77% of Internet users employ search engines first to find
new Web sites and more than 80% of Internet users don't go beyond
the first three pages of search engine results.
Search engines are the primary means by which most Internet users
find information and products online. It is increasingly essential
for marketers to achieve visibility with the major search engines to
attract qualified visitors. But as the Internet has grown, achieving
high rankings with the search engines has become more difficult. To
improve search results and drive targeted traffic to a site,
companies need a search positioning strategy as well as a plan for
search engine marketing - paid inclusions.
Crawler-based search engines like Google use spiders or robots to
search the Web. Spiders read the text on the site's pages, read the
site's meta tags and follow the links that the site connects to.
They follow links from site to site. The crawler returns all that
information back to a database where the data is indexed.
Crawler-based search engines were primarily designed to index HTML
text. Sites that rely heavily on graphics, frames or flash without
much text are difficult to index by search engine robots.
When a user queries a search engine, the search engine searches
through its index or database for matches, using algorithms to
determine relevance. Each search engine uses its own algorithm.
Search engine algorithms use some of the following, and all should
be included in your search engine optimization plan:
Web Page Copy
Visible Web page copy is a crucial component for high rankings with
search engines. Search engines need readable content in Web pages
and HTML tags to properly index and classify a site. Keywords should
be placed in headers, in text near the top of the page and at the
beginning of paragraphs since spiders weigh the content that appears
highest on a page much more heavily than that in lower sections. A
good rule of thumb is that spiders will heavily weigh the first 25
words.
Meta Tags
While there is currently less reliance on meta tags, they are still
relevant. Most engines use the title tag or description tag copy in
the link to a Web page in search results. Ideally, meta tags for
each page should be unique and apply to that page.
Title Tags - these should be keyword-rich descriptive sentences
containing 5-10 words. Do not display just the company name or the
name of the page (such as "home page"). The title tag for each page
on the site should be unique, describing what that page is about.
Meta Description Tag - This should be a sentence that describes the
site in 15-20 words and contains several keywords
Keyword Tags - This is not as important as the title tags or
description tag, but still relevant for some search engines. The
keyword tag should contain strategic keyword phrases, separated by
commas, up to about 700 characters.
ALT Tags - these are also called image tags because they contain the
text that appears when the user rolls his cursor over an image,
including images that contain site copy. Use keywords to describe
the image.
Links
Search engine spiders will index the text on a page and then follow
the links on that page. A site map page helps search spiders to find
all of the pages on a site. The home page should contain at least
one link to the site map.
Most search engines cannot follow dynamic links and links generated
by JavaScript or read image maps. Make sure there are basic links on
the page to the site's other pages.
Robots META Tag and Robots Exclusion File
The Robots META tag allows HTML authors to indicate to visiting
robots if a document may be indexed, or used to harvest more links.
No server administrator action is required. Note that currently only
a few robots implement this. The Robots Exclusion Protocol is a
method that allows Web site administrators to indicate to visiting
robots which parts of their site should not be visited by the robot.
Link Popularity
Most search engines consider a site's link popularity (the number
and relevance of other sites that link to the site) in determining
the site's ranking for particular keyword searches. Swap links with
other related sites and get listed in major directories (DMOZ,
Yahoo) and industry-specific directories. Focus link building
efforts on relevant sites that are likely to deliver quality traffic
to the site.
The best way to build links is by doing research to find appropriate
sites and contacting them to request links or secure listings. Most
sites will be more willing to add a link to a site if an offer of a
reciprocal link is made and the requesting site offers something of
value to its visitors. This could mean creating content such as
articles, white papers, free tools or downloads and other
information that is interesting or informative without trying to
sell something. A links page should be created for the site.

Dynamic Pages
Search engine spiders need html links to find and index pages.
Historically, dynamic pages were a problem for search engine spiders
and most search engines just avoided them by not accepting pages
with a question mark or percent sign in the URL. But now some search
engines, including Google, do index dynamically generated pages if
they can be found through html links on static pages or if the
dynamic pages have been submitted individually (some search engines
may still not accept dynamically generated pages at all).
On some sites, dynamically generated Web pages don't actually exist
until the user selects the variables to generate them and a search
engine spider cannot select variables on a submit form or hit the
submit button. Also, some spiders cannot read beyond any character
in a URL that contains a question mark or a percent sign. Search
engine spiders get stuck in these sites and as a result have been
programmed to detect and avoid them.
Some search engines, such as Google, have begun to accept and index
dynamically generated pages if they are submitted individually. But
most still do not index them and most still will not follow the
links on a dynamically generated page. Options for getting around
these problems include manipulating URLs containing query strings,
creating gateway pages for the dynamically generated pages, and
submitting each dynamically generated page by hand. In addition,
search engines can not index the following kinds of files:
Flash Pages
Flash pages cannot be crawled or indexed by most search engines.
FAST Search and Google can follow embedded links within the Flash
file format. Solutions for search engine visibility include building
both a Flash and HTML version of your site, using a keyword-heavy
entrance page or using Flash movies within an HTML site.
Framed Sites
Search engines have difficulty indexing sites built in frames. Some
require a tag. Since framed pages are also not optimal for
usability, it is recommended that companies stay away from this
format.
Image Maps for Navigation
Due to the code that makes up an image map search engines often get
trapped in them and can't spider your site.
If you use image maps for your main site navigation you should
consider switching to standard HTML hyperlinks or your site will
most likely not get spidered. If you want to keep the image maps you
can, but you should add another navigation scheme to your site that
uses only standard HTML hyperlinks so that your site will get
spidered. An easy way to do this is to create a site map page using
standard HTML links to link to every page on your site. Then add a
standard HTML link on each page of your site that links to the site
map.
